At the end of 2018, several online portals reported that the Democratic Republic of Congo had concluded a preliminary contract with two international consortia to construct a huge dam costing 14 billion dollars.

The project to build a dam on the River Congo, known as “Inga 3”, is intended to allow up to 11,000 MW of electricity to be produced. The Inga 1 and 2 dams were built on the Congo in the 1970s. The contract was secured by a Chinese group including the China Three Gorges Corporation, which is the state operator of the dam over the Yangtze River. The second consortium consists of the Spanish utility companies Grupo Cobra and AEE Holdings. The project in the west of the Central African country has been many years in the planning. Securing the funding for the project will be a major challenge for the DRC – one of the world’s poorest and most corrupt countries.
